Coming soon…

OK, so, here’s the reason why it’s been so quiet on this blog over the past few months.

Wait, let me show you that photo again. Because, actually, there’s not one, but TWO reasons why this blog has been so quiet over past few months.

This fall, my family is doubling. We’re expecting twins! We’re so, so excited! And my sewing project list is growing and growing and growing thanks to a some generous gifts (like a couple of the books above), and too many blog and magazine patterns and tutorials to count. I can’t believe how many great, fun, creative patterns (and fabrics!) there are out there for little ones.

So, why’s it been so quiet? Well, I haven’t actually started on any of those projects yet. I think I spent most of my free time during the first 3+ months of this pregnancy sleeping. But, my energy’s back and I’m ready to get starting making some gifts for these new little people we’ll be meeting in October.

My new sewing studio

Um, hello, yes, I’m still here.

It’s been almost a year since I first posted about my sewing studio remodel. Since then, I loved, then loathed, the bright orange paint I chose for the walls, rearranged the furniture about 3 times, repainted, re-floored (or, rather, talked my husband into laying a new floor during his holiday break), and redecorated.

Then I spent a few months breaking it in, and I think this time, the look is gonna stick. I love it.

For the before pics, head back to that first post.

Now, a tour!

Fabric bins

A post on fabric basket and bin tutorials on How About Orange today reminded me that I have some photos that have been patiently sitting in my queue, waiting for me to write another post so I can do a little show-and-tell.

Fabric bins! For storing (what else?) fabric!

Well, fabric and one spotlight-loving kitty.

I used some nice Denyse Schmidt cotton canvas fabric and a great storage basket tutorial on jcarolinecreative — the same one that I modified for this basket last summer. But, unfortunately, the tutorial isn’t on her web site anymore. So, maybe this post is really more of a show than a tell.

The baskets were a part of my winter project — finally getting my sewing space into shape! It was a project that involved another day or two of painting (is it really any surprise that this orange got to be a little too much after a few months?), a new floor, a custom-built desk (thanks, husband!), and a few of my own DIY projects.

You can definitely tell where I got lazy with this project — I didn’t check to make sure that the fabric was facing the same direction with each basket. And a couple of my handles are a little crooked. But I love the fabric, and I really love my labels — they’re squares of chalk cloth (I bought about 1/4 yard at Home Ec Workshop), so I can relabel the bins whenever.

I have more posts about my sewing studio re-do soon. But first, one last Peeps photo, for Mary Jo.

Spring applique

I was thrilled when I spotted some adorable purple and white baby and toddler long-sleeved shirts on sale at Target a few weeks ago. They made the perfect base for some spring time shapes made with this sweet April shower print (actually called Hushabye Droplets) from Tula Pink.

I definitely needed some spring thinking. I’m looking forward to my flowering magnolia tree and some green grass and birds twittering outside my window…

In the meantime, about a dozen of these shirts and onesies are for sale at The Shop Next Door! I just dropped them off this afternoon.

I threw in a couple of things for the boys, too:

Yarn!

I’m not a contender in the Knitting Olympics (who knew there was such a thing?), but my new project does coincide with the challenge pretty nicely. Look at this very pretty wool yarn I picked up at Home Ec Workshop in Iowa City the other day.

It’s currently about 6 rows into becoming a nice, warm, very simple, chunky knitted scarf. I hope to have it done by the time the next winter Olympics rolls around.
