There used to be a kitchen there!
Thanks to some help (actually, A LOT of help) from my in-laws, we were able to tear down the entire kitchen on Saturday. It was a long day, but went much more quickly than we’d anticipated. (Especially since the tear-down crew was down to three while I took a very long lunch break to attend a friend’s baby shower.)
We were surprised and happy to discover drywall – not lathe – behind the plaster walls, which made the tear-down process much easier. AND it looks like there are oak hardwood floors beneath the cheap laminate we’ll be tearing out once the new walls are up!
The tear down went so well, we had time to run to the hardware store to pick up drywall (that’s what you see stacked on the floor in that photo) and get our new cabinets.
We hope to put up insulation and start drywalling this week. But first, we need to bring some of the wiring up to code and add a few new outlets.

Wow – are you doing most of the work yourself? I like how you can see how the arched doors are made. Makes me think if I ever get the nerve to rip walls off my house that we could construct a few arched doorways. Had those in our past house and I loved them – small detail that adds a lot of charm to an older home.
DM – I love the arched doorway, too. It was little touches like that that really made me love this house when I first saw it.
And, yes, it is a mostly DIY remodel. I’m lucky to have a handy husband with lots of experience drywalling!
